Proof Load Testing FAQs

  • What is proof load testing?

A proof load test is performed on various lifting and rigging devices to ensure they can withstand the design load safely and without failure or yielding.

  • How is a proof load test performed?

Force is applied for a designated time ranging from 1.1 to 1.5 times the design load or maximum allowable working load (MAWL). We perform all tests on a machine capable of linear tests up to 400,000 lbs.

  • What are some common lifting products tested?
    • Overhead cranes and supporting runways
    • Patient hoists
    • Motor vehicle lifts
    • Building cleaning cradle and suspension equipment
    • Goods and passenger lifts
    • Telehandlers and forklifts
    • Lifting accessories
    • Chain blocks
    • Web slings
  • When is a proof load test required?

A proof load test is performed before a new unit or design can be used for service or to ensure that an existing unit or design is still functioning correctly. We recommend testing equipment that carries people at least twice a year and non-people-carrying equipment tested once a year.

  • What are the common methods for testing?
    • Visual examination
    • Functional checks
    • Measurements of wear
    • Traditional non-destructive testing
    • Load testing
